Antibiotic Prophylaxis after Joint Replacement

Antibiotic treatment to protect your joint replacement may be necessary prior to procedures where there is a small risk of blood borne contamination. In particular, this relates to major dental procedures, especially where infection within the tooth is already established or when the dental treatment is conducted within 3 months after your joint replacement.

The following guidelines are recommendations from the Australian Orthopaedic Association and Arthroplasty Society of Australia. As the recommendation for antibiotics is determined by the nature of the dental procedure, please consult with your dentist.
